My dad’s an electronics engineer and has always encouraged me to follow a career in science, but before then I don’t think any of my ancestors were scientists. Apparently my PhD supervisor’s supervisor’s…etc (times 16) supervisor was Sir Isaac Newton though, which is pretty cool 🙂

Nope! My dad’s an artist and my mum is an english teacher, and as far as I can tell they’re the most academic people my family has ever had, so I’m the first scientist!

My grandfather was the equivalent of a chemical engineer, even though he wasn’t able get a higher education at all he was so clever and he worked so hard that everyone treated him like an university graduate!

My mother always talks about him with a lot of love and admiration, so he was surely an inspiration for me even though he died when I was a toddler!
