Little by little, I believe that scientific advance can make the world a better place to live. There are many things which came directly from CERN and the technology we develop to make our experiments: classical one is the WWW (the interwebs!), invented here at CERN by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. A very recent one is that we are developing more accurate and cheaper medical equipment for doing PET-CT scans (an exam to detect cancer cells in the body), based on the bits and pieces we developed to detect particles in our detectors. CERN even has a Technology Transfer Office, responsible for transferring knowledge to the industry and non scientists.

Hopefully, my research is setting the basis for the electronic of the future!
Basically, at the moment your computers, your cellphone and stuff like that use silicon-based electronic, that is reaching the limit of dimensions. If you still want to get your smartphone lighter but with more memory and more capability you will need to switch to another type of microchip.
The materials I am working on could give a new approach to this issue on the long run, but before we can use them I need to understand them much better that we do at the moment!
